European Timber Market Report --
Estonia: Log prices rise across all assortments
[Oct 21, 2025]

German pellet prices rising at the start of the heating season
At the beginning of the fourth quarter and the heating season, the neutral pellet prices in the DACH region continued the trend compared to September. In Germany, the price saw the biggest increase in October. Prices on the wood pellet market rose by 9% in October 2025 compared to the previous month . In Switzerland, it rose somewhat more moderately from a rather high level.

ITALY:  Italian imports hit a record level
From January to July, Italy imported 422,000 m3 of laminated timber, more than in any comparable period before. Imports grew by 12% compared to first seven months of 2024.

Italy restocked lumber inventories in July
In the first seven months, Italian softwood lumber imports increased substantially (+11%) year on year. July, in particular, was an extremely dynamic month, with an import volume of 410,000 m3 (2024: 271,000 m3).

Estonia: Log prices rise across all assortments
Log prices rose across all assortments in Estonia in the third quarter of 2025. While spruce prices fluctuated only slightly over the course of 2024, pine prices rose sharply until the middle of the year.

Austria: Shortage of needle sawlog supply
There appears to be a slight silver lining on the horizon for Austria's economy. The downward trend in the construction industry has bottomed out. Companies are generally less pessimistic about the future.

Softwood sawlogs market
Austria has so far been spared from windthrow, and bark beetle infestation is declining sharply due to weather conditions. The supply of softwood sawlogs is therefore still rather low at present. Demand, on the other hand, is extremely brisk and the locations are fully absorbent. Due to low stocks, sawn timber production had to be scaled back slightly in some areas of southern Austria. There is sufficient harvesting capacity available for planned uses, the roundwood provided is being transported away quickly and taken over relatively promptly. Prices have continued to rise and start at €115 per FMO for the leading spruce, A/B, 2b range. White pine follows spruce with corresponding demand and has also caught up in terms of price in some regions. Larch continues to be in high demand at an unchanged high level.
