Mitchell Lumber lands two Alaska acquisitions
[Sep 9, 2025]

Mitchell Lumber, based in Belfair, Wash., has finalized deals to acquire two Alaska businesses: Valley Lumber Company and Don Abel Building Supply.

According to Mitchell Lumber, the additions of the Juneau companies should push its overall projected 2025 sales near $30 million. Andy Mitchell, co-owner of the company, says Valley Lumber has a contractor/pro yard with a kitchen & bath design center (with cabinets, flooring, window treatments, appliances, and more), while Don Abel Building Supply has a 5-acre facility that includes a 20,000-square-foot home center as well. Don Abel also has a kitchen & bath design center, and a tool and equipment rental center that also has small engine parts and repair. "Don Abel has a boom truck so there is strong business in drywall and roofing with that added capability," Mitchell says.

He adds:
"In acquiring Don Abel Building Supply and Valley Lumber Company, our goal is to uphold the strong traditions and customer relationships that these businesses have built over the years. We are excited to bring our family-oriented approach and commitment to excellence to the Juneau community."

Between its three yards, Mitchell now has approximately 90 employees, almost evenly split 30/30/30 across the branches. All three companies are Orgill dealers and LMC members and use ECI Spruce for ERP.

Mitchell says he and his wife, Breezy, have been looking to expand since taking over the company in 2020. He says he's known Don Abel for about a decade, and that relationship is helping ensure a smooth transition.

"Breezy and I are excited to add some different products to our portfolio through the kitchen & bath design centers and excited to serve a different region," Mitchell says.
